The strategy is one I found from the No Limits on Learning blog called a Graffiti Board and I used this today in class. We have been working on division this week, and have been using skip counting as a strategy. My group have been picking up the concept quite easily although a few still need more help. So here is our graffiti board! (Please excuse the writing, it was a rushed job!)
I gave a little talk on why it was so important to be honest, and surprisingly the students really were honest and they are only in Year 1! Even more surprisingly, at the end of the lesson in reflection time they asked if they could do this every maths lesson as it gave them a direction to focus on. It was a great moment! I love that students are taking ownership of their learning and are thinking about what they have learnt.
The link to the awesome blog this idea came from can be found here
My Year 1 group are seriously good at maths and even though this is the first week of introducing the concept, we are already working on 2-digit division and word problems. Throughout the week we have used my Let's Learn to Divide! unit which you can find here and today I had my students work on these word problems (you can download them for free here) and they started making their division books. These division books are great for exposing students to the patterns of division and see how division is related to multiplication. I found the division books here and although they are aimed at Year 2, I want to see how much I can extend my students. High expectations are important!! Here are some pics of my sweeties hard at work on their word problems. Enjoy your weekend :)
