Friday fun with Yr 5/6

So yesterday was Friday and I had an amazing Yr 5/6 class. Our day was quite hectic as the school is turning 100 today!! So we had lot's of practices for the school performance which is happening today. But we managed to get up to these activities;

Super Sleuths! For the first period, most of the school had scripture and I took those students who don't participate in scripture, which meant I had a mixture of grades 2/3/4/5/6. I buddied the younger and older students and they worked on some deductive reasoning activities from the fantastic book 'Comprehension Activities' by Gunter Schymkiw.

After my scripture students returned, we completed my favourite creative writing activity, 'The mysteries of Harris Burdick' (I've blogged about this amazing book before!) Once again my students didn't fail to amaze me with their imaginative writing and most of the boys made comments such as 'I've never written this much before!' I always make time to read everyone's story out at the end of the lesson because it promotes unity in the classroom, everyone feels valued and also they can hear how their writing sounds which allows me to talk about reading what they've written when editing to make sure it makes sense!

We didn't have a lot of time for maths and because it is nearing the end of our year, the students are mostly completing revision activities. So we played 'Around the World'. Each problem solving activity was placed in front of a country, students picked which country to start on and then attempted to go 'around the world' and complete all the tasks. The tasks were from Rachel Lynette's fantastic enrichment pack which you can find here.
The rest of the spent rehearsing their amazing performances. Hope your enjoying your weekend!
